What a time to be alive! We are getting a movie called Cocaine Bear and yes, it’s about a bear that is coked off its nut and it’s a true story!

The Bear

In Kentucky, way back in 1985, a 175-pound black bear was found dead due to the apparent overdose of cocaine it had discovered in the woods.

The cocaine was apparently dropped from a plane piloted by Andrew Thornton, a convicted drug smuggler (more on him in a minute) because he was carrying too heavy a load while parachuting. The bureau said the bear was found Friday in northern Georgia among 40 opened plastic containers with traces of cocaine.

The Smuggler

On September 11, 1985, while on a smuggling run from Colombia, Andrew Thornton and a partner jumped from his auto-piloted Cessna 404, after dumping packages of cocaine off near Blairsville, Georgia.

Thornton became caught in his parachute and ended up in a free fall to the ground. His body was found in the driveway of Knoxville, Tennessee resident Fred Myers.  The plane crashed over 60 miles away in Hayesville, North Carolina.

At the time of his death Thornton was wearing a bulletproof vest and Gucci loafers, and in possession of night vision goggles, a green army duffel bag containing approximately 75 lbs of cocaine valued at $15 million, $4,500 in cash, six 2.8 g gold Krugerrands, knives, and two pistols.

The Official Synopsis

Inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, this wild thriller finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists, and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500 pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fuelled rampage for more blow… and blood.

The movie was written by Jimmy Warden, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). It will also star Keri Russell, (the late) Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Cocaine Bear sounds as crazy as hell and could be an unexpected treat come 24th February 2023… oh wait, hold the presses, the film is being directed by Elizabeth Banks. Damn.
