A Cobra Kai actor is making his way to DC. Xolo Mariduena is in talks to take the role of Jaime Reyes in Blue Beetle for HBO Max, Warner Bros. and DC Films.
This is turning into a clean sweep for actors from Latin America, with Supergirl and Batgirl also about to be played by people with Latin heritage.
The story centers on the 2006 version of the character. Jamie Reyes is a Mexican-American teenager who discovers the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school. It is a trinket, a curio, half-buried in an abandoned property.
Reyes takes the scarab home, and at night it seeks him out and attaches to the base of Jaime’s spine. It provides him with extraterrestrial armor that enhances his speed and strength while providing weapons, shields, and wings.
The original Blue Beetle was created by Fox Comics and later owned by Charlton Comics. The first Beetle was Dan Garret, who initially gained superpowers from a special vitamin, which was later changed to gaining powers from a “sacred scarab”. The original Blue Beetle was featured not only in his own comic but also in a weekly radio serial.
The second Blue Beetle, created by Charlton and later taken over by DC Comics, was the successor to Dan Garrett known as Ted Kord. Kord “jumped” to the DC Comics universe during the Crisis on Infinite Earths alongside a number of other Charlton Comics characters.
Jaime Reyes was the third major iteration.
Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) will direct from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Scarface) and the project is targeting a shoot to kick off early 2022. John Rickard is producing.
Hopefully, he can fit this in around Cobra Kai filming otherwise we dread to think how Miguel might have to be written out of Cobra Kai.
