Cobra Kai seems like it has only been with us for five minutes and already it is ending. The well-loved Karate Kid continuation has been an entertaining breath of fresh air and wonderful fan service and nostalgia in a world where Hollywood seems determined to deconstruct our heroes and sacrifice beloved mythology on the altar of the personal ideals of the creative team.

One of Netflix top-rated shows, it was with a sense of disappointment from fans when it was confirmed that the upcoming sixth season will be the last. However it will be going out close to its peak, having involved all of the original movie series’ characters and situations in some way – except for The Next Karate Kid. Will Hilary Swank appear in the new, final season?

Cobra-Kai

Back in September 2020 it was announced that a new movie was being planned that seemed unrelated to either the Will Smith-produced kung-fu reboot from 2010, or Cobra Kai.

Show creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg had said in a statement about the end of the show:

“This fandom is the BEST on the planet, and we hope to be telling more ‘Karate Kid’ stories with you down the line. Because as we all know, Cobra Kai Never Dies”.

Now, in an interview with Deadline, Sony Pictures Television Studios President Katherine Pope was asked about the potential for Cobra Kai spin-offs:

“They have some ideas in terms of expanding Cobra Kai and coming at the Karate Kid legacy in different ways. But yes, the movie is a good example too. It’s all of these.

I think we’ve all learned these worlds can exist together and they can feel cohesive and they can feel additive, especially for the fans, and feel like big, big worlds that exist on lots of different levels, they don’t necessarily all exist in the same plane.

Audiences are so savvy now and accepting multiple levels of the IP so the Cobra Kai universe lives on, that’s for sure.”

This sounds worryingly like the kind of Sony thinking that gives us the failing SPUMC and all the retardation that goes with it. She didn’t say the words “Karate Kid Multiverse” but you can tell that’s where thinking is. Not in a comic book sense, but in a flogging of IP until it collapses sense.

All five seasons of Cobra Kai are available to stream on Netflix, watch and enjoy before they ruin it from 2024 onwards when the new Karate Kid film is set for release on June 7th.

The sixth and final season of Cobra Kai is expected on Netflix towards the end of 2023.
