George Clooney is back in the director’s chair with a new movie The Tender Bar, which is being produced for Amazon Studios.
The cast includes Ben Affleck, Christopher Lloyd, Lily Rabe, Tye Sheridan, Max Casella, and Max Martini. William Monohan will be doing the screenplay and it is being written by J. R. Moehringer, based on his memoirs of the same name.
The story is:
The Tender Bar tells the story of J.R. (Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Affleck), is the sharpest and most colourful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures.
As the boy’s determined mother (Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Lloyd) — J.R. begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams — with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar.
This does sound interesting, at least something a little more original than we are used to.
There is already some award buzz about it and it seems people have mentioned it might be in line for the Oscars, although it’s still early days. Affleck and Clooney worked together as producers on Argo, which won three Oscars and was nominated for several other awards.
The Tender Bar is set to stream on Amazon on Dec 22nd this year.
