Director Pierre Morel (Peppermint, Taken) is lining up John Cena to star in his $40 million budgeted action-comedy Freelance.

According to Deadline, Cena is up for the lead role of a special forces operator who is retired with a family, struggling to adapt to post-Army life in the suburbs with all that entails.

He comes out of retirement to take a private job providing security for a female journalist traveling overseas to interview a dictator.

When a military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview, the three are forced to escape into the jungle where they must survive the elements, the military, and one another. This is complicated by the fact that the dictator may have ordered an attack on Cena’s unit in their previous life.

Jimmy Kimmel Live staff writer Jacob Lentz is writing the script with shooting due to start early next year in Colombia. Steve Richards, Renee Tab, and Christopher Tuffin will produce.

John Felix Anthony Cena has a pretty full dance card right now. After starting out as a professional wrestler, his resume states he is an actor, television presenter, and former rapper.

In wrestling, he is tied with Ric Flair for the most world championship reigns in professional wrestling history. Outside the ring Cena is set to deal with “fambly” once again in Fast and the Furious 10, the sequel to Hulu’s Vacation Friends, and HBO Max’s Suicide Squad spinoff series The Peacemaker which begins airing in January.

French filmmaker Morel’s biggest hit was Liam Neeson thriller Taken. On a tiny budget, the French indie thriller went on to make nearly $300M worldwide and spawned two sequels and a TV series.
