Within the last few hours James Gunn took to Twitter once more and finally revealed that it is all change in the world of DC. Big news will come in the new year, but for now he went straight to the heart of the speculation and announced that a new approach is being taken with Superman. A new Superman movie is a key plank of the new strategy. Gunn will write it, but it will tell a different story.. a story without Henry Cavill.
“In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry, and we’re big fans, and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
Cavill himself followed up with a post, talking right here about a changing of the guard. While not an origin story, the movie is expected to be set during Clark Kent’s time as a young reporter at the Daily Planet and introduce key characters like Lois Lane, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen and, in the background, Lex Luthor.
Gunn says he’s already been working on the script for a while. There is speculation Ben Affleck could direct as apparently the pair have had meetings.
Variety have picked up the story, and they claim that JJ Abrams-Ta-Nehisi Coates Superman remains in development, but if that moves it will be as well as this, not instead of this. That does not square with the DC need to tidy up the DCU, remove clutter and confusion and bring a cohesive Universe to the screen. This is likely still on life-support due to cultural sensitivities.
This means we are likely to only have one version of Batman going forward too, and that The Flash rumors are likely true that Flashpoint of some kind will be the giant reset for this.
It is likely, therefore, that Aquaman 2 will be the last we see of Jason Momoa in the role. Wonder Woman 3 will not be happening with Gal Gadot.
Cavill quit The Witcher, and his slate is pretty free now. Does this mean the Taylor-Johnson as Bond scenario is not a done deal, or is Cavill now too old for this new version of Bond? So many moving parts now all across Hollywood as a result of this news.
Will Robert Pattinson return as Batman in this DCU, or will that in-development sequel be halted now? A few hours before this big news broke, there was some more Gunn related social media action when both Gunn and The Batman director Matt Reeves denied the Variety report that Reeves’ movies were to be integrated into this new DCU. Gunn referred to the Variety reporter that broke the story saying:
“There are few reporters I love more than @adambvary – truly a good guy – but in this case he needs to get a new source as this is entirely untrue.”
Reeves then followed up with a tweet saying:
“The source I’m really liking on this is Mr. @JamesGunn.”
However if The Batman universe is not integrated into this DCU, then that also runs contrary to the core mission of a single and cohesive narrative for DC, so Pattinson could also be done in the role as that universe is folded.
