It appears that the desire of JJ Abrams to run a new iteration of the DCEU is dead. Completely. This is a good thing, as his aborted Superman: Flyby project was one of the worst unmade scripts in existence. His plans for the DCEU were his standard brand of hackery, bordering on insanity. It seems adults within the new leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery have nixed this.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new plan for the DCEU is formed and they have an “intense desire” for Henry Cavill’s version of Superman to come back for a new project. This will be a Man Of Steel sequel at the center of a continuance of the DCEU rather than a total reset.

Superman 1

Between the reaction to Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League and the excitement surrounding something as small as the Black Adam post-credits scene, they have realized what the fans have been shouting all along.

Walter Hamada and Geoff Johns have been dropkicked to the curb. Ta-Nehisi Coates-penned multi-decade-spanning story with a Black Superman is dead along with them, and Abrams’ career at Warner Bros. Charles Roven will take things forward as producer.

Writers are currently being courted with Christopher McQuarrie, who worked with Cavill on 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, as favorite. The timing around McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible commitments are key. McQuarrie originally pitched an idea with Cavill a few years ago, so this would seem to confirm what we reported on at the time. That Warner Bros. old leadership had messed up badly with the DCEU, and were over-committed to their idiotic plans, but in their blind Hollywood Exec pride were absolutely incapable of admitting they were constantly screwing things up.

Superman 2

They received a spanking from parent AT&T and were made to look stupid by HBO Max and the Snyder Cut at the time.

The new leadership must have been horrified to discover that a rising star (at the time) filmmaker like McQuarrie had been through the door, and the studio had said “no” to continue their own doomed approach.

They also confirmed that Dwayne Johnson is central to Cavill’s return. Outgoing executive Walter Hamada had repeatedly blocked plans, including the Black Adam cameo, as he didn’t want anything to interfere with his Black Superman project with Abrams. Hamada has been, essentially, fired.

Black Adam

Johnson apparently went around the executive personally and then talked to new Warner chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.

The Coates movie is dead. Abrams has been tossed Hot Wheels as a pity fuck. Hamada is being exited. There are also more moves underway at Warner Bros. Discovery around the DCEU.
