Captain America 4 is a go! Anthony Mackie has reportedly closed his deal to star in Marvel Studios’ fourth movie in the Captain America franchise, as part of the wider MCU.
We already saw Sam Wilson take on the mantle of the new Captain America at the end of the recent Falcon and The Winter Soldier run on Disney+. This news would mean a second series of that show is likely to not be forthcoming anytime soon.
In April it was revealed that the creator of Falcon And The Winter Soldier creator Malcolm Spellman was developing the fourth movie for Marvel Studios. It was always intended for Falcon to become the new Cap, with Sam Wilson replacing the retired and content Steve Rogers.
Spellman and Dalan Musson will write the script with Kari Skogland directing.
In the comics Following Steve Rogers’s retirement, Wilson becomes the newest Captain America in All-New Captain America #1 (January 2015) and leader of the Avengers. Wilson’s deceased nephew was the Incredible Hulk’s sometime-sidekick Jim Wilson, one of the first openly HIV-positive comic-book characters. Jim Wilson’s father Gideon Wilson would go on to join the Gamma Corps.
Wilson would eventually hand the mantle back after using a Cosmic Cube fragment to restore Steve Rogers in order to defeat Hydra. In that storyline, Rogers used Thor’s hammer as per Avengers: Endgame.
In an alternate reality revealed during a 1983 What If…? story, Sam – under his gang name Snap – is a member of a secret rebellion force in a version of the United States that turned fascist. He aids Captain America in beating an impostor called William Burnside and leading the chastised nation back to its democratic roots.
Before this is released in cinemas, Marvel Phase 4 has to roll out including the multiverse, with the Secret Invasion coming to Disney+. The fallout from Loki is also set to wreak havoc on the MCU.
