The Sopranos Prequel Due In September

Warner Bros. shared a first-look of Michael Gandolfini as young Tony Soprano in a new trailer for its 2021 release schedule.

A new sizzle reel for Warner Bros.’ 2021 theatrical film slate, which will controversially be simultaneously released on HBO Max and in theaters, offers a fleeting glimpse of The Many Saints Of Newark and Michael Gandolfini, the son of the late, great James Gandolfini, as a young version of Tony Soprano, the mob boss his father played on The Sopranos.

Donning a denim sherpa jacket on the streets of Newark, New Jersey, Michael can be seen in the role of young Tony, who lashes out at a man as his full name is called “Antonio Soprano”.

Alongside The Many Saints Of Newark snippet, the trailer also features footage of Dune, The Suicide Squad, King Richard, and the Space Jam remake with Lebron James.

Written by Sopranos creator David Chase, the prequel is set against the backdrop of the Newark riots during the 60s and sees the rise of rival gangsters who challenge the DiMeo crime family’s hold over the New Jersey city. It will feature younger versions of characters seen or discussed on The Sopranos, such as Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti, father of Christopher (Michael Imperioli); Jon Bernthal as Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano, Tony’s father; and Vera Farmiga as Livia Soprano.

The Many Saints Of Newark, which is being produced by New Line Cinemas and released by Warner Bros., is set to be released in cinemas and on HBO Max on September 24th.
