Overstory Will Be Duo’s Third Project For Streamer

Game Of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are developing a series adaptation of the Richard Powers novel The Overstory at Netflix.

The streamer describes the series as –

“a sweeping, impassioned work of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of the natural world. It tells the story of a world alongside ours that is vast, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. A handful of disparate people learn how to see that world and are drawn into its unfolding catastrophe.”

According to the streamer, The Overstory is currently in development with Richard Robbins (12 Monkeys) writing the script in addition to his role as an executive producer.

This will be the duo’s third project for Netflix under their five-year overall deal and Wolverine’s Hugh Jackman is set to be an executive producer.

Last year, Jackman referred to The Overstory as –

“the most transformative bit of fiction I have read in a long time,”

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is a notable fan of The Overstory, telling The New York Times last year the 2019 novel is –

“a wonderful example of how great storytelling can help build understanding and empathy. Original and profound.”

The two other shows Benioff and Weiss have in the works are Three-Body Problem, which is a sci-fi trilogy by Chinese author Liu Cixin, and the other is The Chair, a series from Amanda Peet (who also happens to be Benioff’s wife) about “the Chair of an English department at a major university.”

Another project of the duo’s, a “slavery drama” for HBO called Confederate, was cancelled at the beginning of 2020 before it even aired its first episode after it met significant criticism online.
