Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch made it abundantly clear that he has no interest in taking on the role of Star Wars character Grand Admiral Thrawn.

During an interview with Steve Weintraub of Collider to promote his new movie The Courier, Weintraub asked Cumberbatch if he’s been watching The Mandalorian. He then brought up that people have been saying Cumberbatch would be great as Grand Admiral Thrawn. After which Cumberbatch asked about the character:

“Grand Admiral Thrawn? Does he turn into Peter Cushing, or something? Is that…?”

Weintraub responded that Thrawn’s skin was blue and that’s about all Cumberbatch needed to decline the possibility of playing the part.

“That’s a straight no from me, right now. There’s no way I want to be turned blue. I turned the air blue, very recently.”

“No no, seriously, I have precious time with my children and I think sitting in a makeup chair and being painted blue, and the amount of time it would take to do that and then take it off at the end of the day might just… it’s not the right time in my life for that,”

The rumor is that Disney is looking to bring Thrawn into the Star Wars universe via The Mandalorian. According to Mikey Sutton at Geekosity in September 2020, a Star Wars Rebels live-action theatrical film was being developed with Thrawn as the main villain.

“According to a source, the film will include characters introduced on the Rebels animated show and the Big Bad is going to be Grand Admiral Thrawn.”

There’s official hints of a Mandalorian theatrical film and connection with shows including Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic, stated as so by Kathleen Kennedy.

“Set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, these interconnected shows along with future stories will excite new audiences, embrace our most passionate fans, and will culminate in a climactic story event.”

It’s possible that Grand Admiral Thrawn will be introduced in The Mandalorian and all of this will come down to a “climactic story event” that takes place in the rumored Rebels movies.

Much to be speculated, except for Benedict Cumberbatch playing Grand Admiral Thrawn. That’s just not happening.
