Sequel Beginning To Take Shape
Rebecca director Ben Wheatley has signed by Warner Bros. to take the reigns on a sequel to the Jason Statham shark flick The Meg.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, much of key talent from the first movie is expected to return for The Meg 2, including Statham, who is said to be creatively involved. Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the most recent draft working off an initial draft by Dean Georgaris (all three worked shared credit on The Meg). Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Belle Avery are back as producers.
Development of the sequel comes two years after The Meg took in an impressive $530 million worldwide. Based on the novel by our friend Steve Alten, the film revolved around a monstrous megalodon emerging from the Mariana Trench, in which Statham played a shark expert who fights tooth and nail against the giant prehistoric beast.
Warner Bros. has wanted a Meg sequel ever since the original movie started raking in cash at the box office. Lucky for them, the novel on which the first film is based has a sequel novel that’s already been published.
It’s called The Trench, and here’s the plot synopsis –
“Four years after the incident at the Mariana Trench that unleashed a pregnant Megaladon, Jonas Taylor now houses her one surviving offspring at the Tanaka Institute. Deep in debt, Taylor has turned to an eccentric billionaire to help keep the institute afloat, but it doesn’t come without a price. Drawn into a web of deceit and lies, plagued by nightmares of his own death, Taylor must once again face frightening monsters of unimaginable power. Only this time, it’s not just the sharks he has to watch out for.”
Alten wrote Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror in 1997 and has since written a further six books within The Meg series and has another on the way.
Wheatley’s directorial credits include Sightseers, Kill List, High Rise and Free Fire, which starred Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy and Armie Hammer. Netflix hired Wheatley in 2018 to direct a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca, starring Hammer, Lily James, and Kristin Scott Thomas.
