Snyder has written and is producing the prequel, called Army of Thieves, which is going to be a comedic heist movie. The plot is described as :
A prequel, set before the events of Army of the Dead, which focuses on German safecracker Ludwig Dieter leading a group of aspiring thieves on a top secret heist during the early stages of the zombie apocalypse.
If this is set in the Army of the Dead ‘universe’… ‘the early stages of the zombie apocalypse’, so this is about a week before AotD, or at least at the start of it?
Or was there another breakout somewhere else? Does it have anything to do with the Area 51 set-up? Does any of it matter?
The director Matthias Schweighöfer has previously said the movie isn’t categorically a zombie film, but that the undead may still appear; while Snyder confirmed that there will be zombies in the film.
Snyder describes the film as similar to The Italian Job in a world where zombies exist, stating:
“takes place in a world where these zombies exist in America and it’s causing instability in the banking institutions. They’re moving money around, so it’s the perfect opportunity for a heist.”
Not only is Army Of Thieves being directed by Schweighöfer he is also reprising his role as Ludwig Dieter. The rest of the cast includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Jonathan Cohen, Noemie Nakai to name a few.
After Army Of Thieves is released, Netflix has announced the release of Army Of The Dead: Lost Vegas, an anime series that takes place years before the original movie.
Army Of The Dead: Lost Vegas is set to start streaming sometime in 2021, but no date is set yet.
