If you are of a certain age, then Beavis and Butt-Head actually mean something to you. In a time of Friends and Speed, back when The Simpsons was actually funny, MTV was still a big deal and it still played actual music videos.
However, MTV had started to stray from its purpose already at this time. Mike Judge created an adult cartoon following a pair of teenage slackers characterized by their complete apathy, total lack of intelligence, lowbrow humor, and failure to attract women.
After appearing in Judge’s 1992 short film Frog Baseball on MTV’s animation showcase Liquid Television, MTV commissioned a full series around the characters that eventually ran for seven seasons from March 1993 to November 1997.
There was a feature film, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, in 1996. An eighth season was part of a short-lived revival on MTV from October 2011.
In the never-ending quest for content, Paramount+ has ordered a further two seasons and a second movie. Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe will be released on June 23, 2022 on Paramount+.
The movie sees the not-so-loveable losers heading into space in 1998 and subsequently ending up in 2022 where they discover the world around them has changed. They become the target of Nasa, the NSA, the Texas governor, and highly intelligent versions of themselves from a parallel universe.
Creator Mike Judge writes, directs and stars in the feature.
