Ari Aster is known for Hereditary and Midsommar. He’s one of those writer directors that pops up now and then, leaves a huge dent in the cinema landscape, and then disappears for a while. He is back with his newest movie called Beau is Afraid, which is produced by A24.
I’m a fan of his work. His movies are very deep and sometimes take more than one watch, and then a couple of videos on YouTube, to explain but they are always interesting and something new.
Beau is Afraid seems like another one. I watched this trailer, knowing nothing about it, but loved the imagery. Then I read the synopsis:
“A decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.”
I didn’t even get that from the trailer, I mean, I don’t know what I got from the trailer, but I know I want to see it.
Beau is Afraid stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Parker Posey, Richard Kind, Michael Gandolfini, and Zoe Lister-Jones. Aster is someone that keeps his projects closely under wraps until they are released, and this looks very much the same. The IMDb states:
Described by Ari Aster as a “zonky nightmare comedy”.
An Aster movie, starring Phoenix and produced by A24? Yes please! At the very least, it’ll be something new and original.
Beau is Afraid is will be in theatres in April 2023.
