There Will Be Blood and Love and Mercy star Paul Dano is lined up to join Matt Reeves’ The Batman as The Riddler.
This has been confirmed by the studio.
Actor Jonah Hill had previously been linked as being in talks for the role but he’s no longer involved in the project. Rumours came up this week that Seth Rogen was being considered early on for the role of The Penguin as a partner casting to Hill as Riddler. This is not happening either.
In the movie, the character will go by the name of Edward Nashton. Those familiar with Batman lore will know this was a name mentioned in the origin of The a Riddler before he adopted Edward Nigma (or Nygma, depending on the writers) as an alter-ego.
Robert Pattinson as Batman and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman are confirmed. Jeffrey Wright has also been linked to the project in the role of Commissioner Gordon, but this is not yet announced.
Pattinson spoke with The New York Times this week about the role, saying:
“Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero – there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.
I love the director, Matt Reeves, and it’s a dope character. His morality is a little bit off. He’s not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character. There is a simplicity to his worldview, but where it sits is strange, which allows you to have more scope with the character.”
The film will shoot early next year for a June 2021 release.
