What started as something that sounded like a joke – a live-action Barbie movie – is building into an anticipated movie, surrounded by buzz.

The word on the street is that it’s funny and clever. Even the film’s aesthetics are having a cultural impact, with the fashion trend Barbiecore being hailed as a coming thing by those who don’t shop at outlet stores just twice a year like us, therefore know about these things.

Don’t take our word for it. This is what Vogue had to say:

“The filming of Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming movie has made Barbiecore—which mostly translates into skimpy looks in bright pink—the trend of this summer.”

Set photos have gone viral there is a lot of chatter about the cast, the style and ther approach. Against our better judgement we are starting to get intrigued here at the Outpost. We are going to go and watch Commando and Predator back-to-back until we snap out of it.

One person on the cast who has been both silent, and absent from behind the scenes pictures is Will Ferrell. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Ferrell finally revealed the part he is to play. He will be the fictional CEO of Mattel, the toy company behind Barbie. He said the character is weird, and massively insensitive. He was full of praise for the script:

“It is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate example of high art and low art. It’s a loving homage to the brand and, at the same time, couldn’t be more satirical – just an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie’s criticized and yet why every little girl still wants to play with Barbie. Boy, when I read it, I was like, ‘This is fantastic.’”

Barbie also stars Kate McKinnon, Emerald Fennell, America Ferrera, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, and Connor Swindells alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling as Ken. It is expected to feature an array of cameos.

Barbie is set for a July 23rd 2023 release, after which we can stop feeling weird.
