Do you remember cinema?  When weekly thousands of us would flock to a movie theatre and pay out a small fortune for tickets and refreshments? Before the dark times, before the ‘Rona.

And one year ago this weekend we were out in force.  Avengers: Endgame was to deliver the answers to the questions we had been asking since THAT cliffhanger at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.  Millions of us wanted those answers.

That demand drove the blockbuster to staggering performance with $1.2 billion during its opening weekend alone, before ultimately going to make $2.797 billion worldwide and dethrone Avatar as the highest grossing movie of all time.

However it cost a fortune.  Robert Downey Jr alone pulled in $70m for his role as Iron Man himself, Tony Stark.  So top line performance isn’t the full story.  What of profit?  We already talked about yet more bad news for Lucasfilm and their piss-poor stewardship of what was, until then, arguably cinema’s biggest property in Star Wars.

The full extent of Avengers: Endgame’s success has now been revealed.  Deadline analysis shows it didn’t just make money.  It made all the money!

$900 million in profit straight profit.

Remember early estimates were for Endgame to make around $600m.  So they’re blew through this.  Oh dear Kathy, one of your colleagues is making you look bad in front of the boss!

Infinity War had previously made half a billion dollars for the studio the year before.

While Downey Jr’s fee means he has now earned around $275m for his time in the MCU the other Marvel actors didn’t do too badly either.  Deadline report that a $175m bonus pot was set aside by Disney to reward their favorite employees.

Meanwhile, over at Lucasfilm…
