Avatar: The Way Of Water just became the top grossing movie, internationally, of 2022 edging out Top Gun: Maverick overseas. This is after taking just two weeks to pass the $1 billion mark. It is doing steady business with no challengers on the horizon for a while.
It still remains to be seen if we get Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. However it is certain we are getting Avatar 3 as it is already mostly shot. After forests and oceans, where will James Cameron go next on Pandora?
Producer Jon Landau teased that the fifth film, if they get that far, will return to Earth. Now in an interview with French outlet 20 Minutes, Cameron was asked about the third film and teased “Ash People”, a tribe on Pandora who may not be as nice as the others:
“The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to reveal the Na’vi from another angle because, for the moment, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we’ll have the opposite.
We will also explore new universes while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. But, obviously, everything will depend on how Avatar 2 will be received, if it will find its audience.”
Avatar 3 is pencilled in for a December 20th 2024 release. Avatar 4 is expected, if greenlit, in 2026 with the fifth following in 2028.
