That is milestone #1 done and dusted. Avatar: The Way Of Water snared $23.8 million domestically and $50.8 million overseas on Tuesday to send it past the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
It has done this in two weeks, making it only the sixth movie in all of history to hit that mark so quickly. It is also the first movie to achieve that since Spider-Man: No Way Home a year ago. It is at $1.029 billion by close of play on Tuesday night. Cameron has indicated the movie needs to hit around $2 billion to be considered a good success.
This means Top Gun: Maverick remains the highest grossing movie of the year, simply due to how calendars work, but it was closer than many thought with Avatar: The Way Of Water closing in strong.
Top Gun: Maverick will be ordering doubles all round then, as it was the highest grossing movie of the year, both domestically and globally. It was Tom Cruise’s biggest opening. It was his highest-grossing movie ever. It had the largest Memorial Day Weekend of all time, and also became the first movie in history to be #1 at the box office for both Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend. It achieved all of this without needing a single subplot about a mixed race gay couple adopting a baby from overseas, or something.
Along with being the best-selling digital release ever, yesterday the studio has announced it was the most-watched movie globally in its premiere weekend on streaming. So this Christmas, families everywhere settled down to watch Tom Cruise shotting down not-Iranians while they opened their presents. America, fuck yeah!
It blew past previous record holder Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by 60%. It also led to a 400% increase in views of the origin Top Gun as fathers settled down to tell there children the heart warming Christmas story of Pete Mitchell and Goose, who died for our sins.
