Day by day, week by week, Avatar continues to pull in the money, and the serving of this that many will have to eat grows, including me. I was as cynical as anyone.
Two days ago, Avatar: The Way of Water passed the $1.5 billion mark and is still climbing. It passed Top Gun: Maverick in 22 days of release to become the No. 1 release in the year. It is now officially the 10th highest grossing movie of all time globally, passing Fast And Furious 7. When the numbers come in before the weekend it will have passed The Avengers in 9th slot and will still be climbing, with midweek and weekend numbers showing no huge drop-offs.
Projections show it pushing towards $2.8 billion at the top end by the close of its run. It is on track to become the third highest grossing movie of all time, pushing Titanic down to 4th, with only Avengers: Endgame and the original Avatar in front of it.
Avatar 4 and 5 are likely to be greenlit, and Feige and Kennedy will find they have a Na’vi fox in their comfortable Mouse House as Iger searches for dough.
A quick check of my local multiples shows Avatar still showing four times a day in standard and four in 3D, on a weekday. It goes higher at the weekends, and there is still no sign of serious blockbuster entertainment until the middle of next month when Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania rolls into town to unleash Kang The Conqueror on the MCU.
Whatever “It” is, Cameron appears to still have “It”.
