Big James Cameron movies have had an association with a big song. Leona Lewis’ I See You (Theme From Avatar) was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Grammy. That Celine Dion song from Titanic was everywhere for months, and even scored a re-release. Now it seems maybe The Weeknd will be looking for the same success with Avatar: The Way of Water.
Yesterday the Canadian singer uploaded a short clip displaying the film’s logo and Dec. 16 release date. In the background, there was what seemed like new music with a choir and a heavy, tribal drum beat. It was also clearly related to the originals James Horner score.
You can visit the page and hear the music here.
Once it dropped, the film’s official account retweeted the post and uploaded a clip of the account following the Weeknd on Twitter. Jon Landau, the film’s producer, then posted a clip of the two together with the caption:
“As the Na’vi [the fictional language of the film] say, ‘Zola’u nìprrte’ soaiane Avatar’… Welcome to the Avatar family.”

Variety reported on this, and say they reached out to reps for the Weeknd and Disney, and have so far received no response.
Avatar: The Way of Water debuts in just over a week and is already tracking between $150 million and $175 million, maybe higher. Reports have claimed that the production budget alone for this has reached $250 million which, according to Cameron’s estimates:
“…you have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”
Can he repeat his magic touch? Or is thirteen years after the last outing simply too long?
