Theater owners are going to have to go right to the back of their storerooms. They need to dig out that dusty old 3D projector and the boxes full of 3D glasses again, as Avatar 2 is coming closer.

Remember how the 3D revolution was going to change cinema and wipe out piracy? At home, we all have a 3D TV with barely used functionality and glasses in a drawer somewhere. On new TVs the functionality no longer exists. The revolution stalled, the concept died. It ended with the movie that started it all – Avatar.

Now, as CinemaCon rumbles on, Disney Studios presentation has confirmed the official title of the upcoming sequel – Avatar: The Way of Water.

This is the first of James Cameron’s four planned Avatar sequels, and the teaser is imminent. It will be shown in cinemas with Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which is released next week.

It will then be a week before the trailer is then released online in an official format. To whip up the interest, the original Avatar will be released on September 23rd. This version will apparently be a remaster with a new sound mix.

According to the blurb about Avatar 2:

“Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their planet.”

As part of the presentation, producer Jon Landau said that each sequel will manage to be both standalone and part of a larger story. Each sequel has a standalone story and features its own conclusion and resolution, but they fit together to form a saga.

Avatar: The Way of Water opens everywhere on December 16th.
