Three movies that grew and grew in scope and scale, in the process becoming a pop culture touchpoint with in-jokes and catchphrases, they launched a thousand bad impersonations. Then, suddenly, Austin Powers was no more.

After the third instalment, 2002s Austin Powers In Goldmember, there was often talk of a fourth instalment but it never came to anything. Mike Myers went on to Shrek and despite the frequent rumors nothing has ever really taken off.

Appearing on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show promoting his supporting role in Amsterdam, talk turned to another Powers sequel and Myers decided to answer cryptically:

“I don’t have anything to announce. I can neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of such a project. Yeah, I would love to do it, of course, it’s fun… I have three kids under the age of 11, I’ve been super super busy being a dad… I’ll see what I can do, Jimmy Fallon!”

$670 million in total box office take on a comparatively small budget means it is a surprise it hasn’t happened yet. “Legacy” sequels are all the rage and Hollywood does love money.

With the changes in the world since 2002, including in the James Bond movies which remain Austin Powers’ main source of inspiration, is the time right for a comeback? Never Say Austin Again featuring a retired Powers returning to the fray? Finding himself even more out of touch than he was when returned from the 1960s, facing wokeness and the insanity of the modern world?

“It’s not a woman, it’s a man… man, and you must respect their pronouns and are now guilty of a hate crime for knocking them out even though they attacked you first!”

It could work, if they are brave.

I re-watched all three movies recently and they still stand-up, with their delightfully silly, juvenile humor and revelling in their own, completely acknowledged, stupidity. I still laughed out loud several times even though I knew the gags were coming.
