Three years ago now, Netflix announced that they were letting Guillermo del Toro a chance to fulfill a lifelong passion project. The director had always wanted to make a stop-motion animation of the story of Pinocchio.

A teaser trailer is now online and here it is:

Obviously not giving much away, since it’s just a teaser. I have to say that I don’t like the “you think you knew the story” bit. It just makes you wonder what they have changed and how much and why?

You may recognize the voice of Sebastian J Cricket as Ewan McGregor. The movie does boast an impressive cast: Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, David Bradly, Ron Perlman, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Tim Blake Nelson, John Turturro, and Burn Gorman.

It has been directed by Del Toro and Mark Gustafson. It’s based on the original novel by Carlo Collodi, with the screenplay completed by Del Toro, Patrick McHale, Matthew Robbins, and Gris Grimly.

Del Toro said this when the the project was announced:

“No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio. In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world.

I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember. After the incredible experience we have had on Trollhunters, I am grateful that the talented team at Netflix is giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to introduce audiences everywhere to my version of this strange puppet-turned-real-boy.”

It does sound like a passion project for him and, generally, Del Toro does make a great movie. His new movie, Nightmare Alley is already getting great critical acclaim.

Pinocchio will be streaming on Netflix in December 2022.
