Batman: Caped Crusader was supposed to be a big deal. HBO Max and Cartoon Network rolled in a straight-to-series order in May 2022. J.J. Abrams was teaming up with The Batman director Matt Reeves and co-developer of the iconic 1990s Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm.

It was planned to return to the glory days of the 1990s animation, a show that still holds up today. They planned a rebirth of the noir aesthetic and serious themes. Then, just three months later, it was all over.

Warner Bros. Animation was to have seven projects canned as a result of Warner Bros. Discovery cost-cutting. Batman: Caped Crusader was one of them. The creative team was allowed to shop around to find another platform and keep it alive.

Amazon to the rescue! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Batman: Caped Crusader has been handed a two-season order by the shopping, streaming, and cloud computing giant.

Comics writer Ed Brubaker is in charge of the writers’ room and will be Timm’s co-pilot for the first season.
