Based On The Exploits Of Joe Exotic

Variety reports that the series about Tiger King’s Joe Exotic starring Nicolas Cage has landed with Amazon for development.

This announcement follows in the heels of NBCUniversal who issued a straight-to-series order for a new series entitled Joe Exotic, with Kate McKinnon starring as Carol Baskin.

Exotic is currently serving a 22-year prison on 17 federal charges of animal abuse and two charges of murder-for-hire, for hiring a hitman to kill Baskin.

Baskin, Joe‘s real-life rival and “co-star” of Tiger King, was recently named as one of the new Dancing With The Stars cast members, and recently opened up about Cage playing the role. She said –

“He is such a favorite actor of mine, and I just don’t know if I can even watch him after seeing that role.”

The Nic Cage scripted series is based on the Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild,” by Leif Reigstad. The story centres around Joe Shreibvogel (Cage), a.k.a. Joe Exotic, an eccentric exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park.

The show will explore how Shreibvogel transformed himself into Joe Exotic, and how he became lost within his own creation.

The role marks the first regular television role of Cage’s career. He has long been praised for his film work, having won the Academy Award for best actor for Leaving Las Vegas. He also recently lent his voice to the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and starred in the acclaimed movies Mandy and Color Out Of Space.

Dan Lagana (American Vandal) will serve as the writer, showrunner and executive producer of the series, under his overall deal with CBS TV Studios.

Cage will next be seen on the big screen in Jiu-Jitsu alongside Frank Grillo, Tony Jaa, Rick Yune and Marie Avgeropoulos.
