Star of Detroit and The Maze Runner, Will Poulter, has been cast in the key role of Adam Warlock in the upcoming MCU entry Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 according to Deadline.

James Gunn is writing and directing the feature which is in pre-production right now. They will shoot at the end of this year and early next year with a locked release date of May 3rd, 2023.

The role is said to have been highly contested. It’s a pretty famous Marvel villain, and everyone wants in on the MCU as it’s the biggest franchise ticket in town for actors. Rege-Jean Page (Bridgerton) and George MacKay (1917) were also in the running. The character was first teased in the MCU during the credits stinger for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

According to Marvel-lore, Adam Warlock, known only as Him or Adam, first appeared in Fantastic Four #66–67 (September 1967) and Thor #163–166 (April–July 1969). He was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and significantly developed by Roy Thomas and Jim Starlin.

The character appeared in over four decades of Marvel comics including Marvel Premiere and Strange Tales. He was presented as a genetically perfect, immortal cosmic being with a wide array of powers.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel are all returning for the new installment.

As far back as November 2014, James Gunn said he had the basic story for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 while working on the first movie, as well as a lot of ideas for the third movie. After Gunn was announced as writing and directing the third movie in the series the “Tweet-gate” controversy meant he was removed from the plans until he was reinstated by Bob Iger and Kevin Feige.
