Sometimes Last Movie Outpost is just ahead of the curve. When JJ Abrams and Bad Robot jumped across to Warner Bros. a couple of years ago it was widely believed to be on the understanding that he got to largely control a new evolution of the DCEU, and DC. He had big ideas for Superman and Green Lantern, among others, and wanted hands on all the levers.

We reported over the last couple of days how this direction was no longer a done deal at Warner Bros. with their new owners Discovery about to clear the decks and wipe out swathes of senior executives who had failed some valuable properties. We speculated that the new leadership was very aware that their highly valuable assets were being mistreated and that the Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams’ version of Superman would never see the light of day.

Now Variety is getting caught up. The $43 billion Warner Bros. and Discovery deal is all tied up and the first target is a complete overhaul of the entire DC Entertainment label.

David Zaslav, CEO of the new combined company, has met with top leadership about DC becoming “it’s own solidified content vertical” to endure it has a more “coherent creative and brand strategy”.

For those of you who don’t speak Corporate Bullshit, this basically means make it like Marvel Studios. Align it into a single unit, empower it, and let it plan a proper roadmap and creative vision under some singular leadership. They are already starting the search for a creative and strategic lead to be DCs answer to Marvel’s Kevin Feige.

JJ Abrams thought that was him. Guess not. Not anymore.

Well… bye!

The noise out of Burbank is that Zaslav is of the opinion that sorting out the mess at DC is a huge pillar in defining the success of the merger between WB and Discovery so is not hanging around on this one.

DC feature film development, streaming, and TV are all in the crosshairs. The latter would be ripped away from Warner Bros. Television and placed into the new unit alongside the movies to bring a singular creative vision. The gaming division is also in the tent.

Zaslev is reportedly pointing to Joker as an example of how characters can be properly leveraged with care and attention.
