The 80s was a great decade for movies, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Lethal Weapon, the list is pretty much endless. 80s action movies were just the best! You had Arnie, Sly, Van Damme and Bruce Willis. Die Hard is one of those stand-out movies, John McClane, Nakatomi Towers, that British German bad guy…it is awesome.

Willis stamped himself as one of the all-time great action stars and the sky was the limit.

It is now 2021 and the days of John McClane are behind Willis, well, until the announce Die Hard In Shady Acres Retirement Home. Bruce is now doing things like Apex and here’s my review.

Apex stars Willis, Neal McDonough, Corey Large, Alexia Fast, Lochlyn Munro, Nels Lennarson, Megan Peta Hill, and some others I’ve never heard of. It’s written and directed by Edward Drake, known for another of Willis’ churned-out movies, Cosmic Sin and you can read the review here.

I found that this is a remake of a movie called Surviving the Game (1994) starring Rutger Hauer, Ice-T, Charles S. Dutton, Gary Busey, F. Murray Abraham, and John C McGinley. I want to now find a copy of this and watch it.

The story of Apex is very, very simple:

Five elite hunters pay to hunt down a man on a deserted island, only to find themselves becoming the prey.

From this simple story, it goes downhill.

McDonough is set up as the bad guy. He likes to kill people and he’s evil. The whole thing is set in the future and people teleport to and from the island somehow. At the beginning of the movie, McDonough says he’s getting bored with the easy kills and he would like a challenge.

Guess who they get? Yep, Bruce! Willis is an ex-cop and in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Ground-breaking writing. He is given the chance for freedom if he goes to be hunted on the island. I’m not going to tell you the rest of the story, because it’s a paint by numbers action film and what you are imagining happens, happens. No surprises, no twist, very little character expansion…it’s exactly as you expect.

Even though it stars Willis, he is barely in it. He spends most of the time hiding in the woods, listening to the other hunters argue with each other and kill each other off.

When Willis gets to the island, he knows he’s there to be hunted. He is in a guest house, which is like a drop-off point for the prey, so he grabs a jacket. The island is a wooded area, so he grabs a nice bright red jacket, you know that will really blend into the forest environment. There is a throwaway line about this, but it was just to show that Willis was a bad-ass? Or just an idiot?

As the hunters kill each other off, Willis just hangs around in the bushes, listens in, and then at one point, picks berries and smokes a cigar. Yep, a man being hunted by obviously dangerous people with hardcore weapons literally has a stroll through the woods happily smoking a cigar.

I can’t exactly remember how the movie ended because it was bland, uninteresting, dull, and completely predictable. How you think the movie is going to end is exactly the way it ends. If there was some kind of plot twist I missed it.

Apex is utter crap. Nothing new, nothing original, completely as expected, and with nothing to make it stand out. I cannot believe that Bruce Willis, JOHN McCLANE, was in this shite!

I really have taken one for the team here and watched it so you don’t have to. I know I’ve said that I like cheesy movies, but this was just garbage. There is no reason to watch it. Stay away or you are going to waste 2 hours.
